Why Bother?
Communities sometimes ask, “Why bother with planning?” Well, there are many reasons your community should plan for its future.
- First, CT state legislation requires communities to up date their POCDs every 10 years. If your town does not update its plan, there are certain state funding programs, including open space protection grants that it will not be eligible for.
In MA, although there is much flexibility in how often and under what circumstances a Planning Board develops a Master Plan, as in CT the state uses a carrot and stick approach. Municipalities are required to update plans on a regular basis to be eligible for certain state grant programs.
- Secondly and more importantly, this is your community’s opportunity to shape its future. If your community does not plan for its future, others will. Developers and landowners who are converting land to other uses will continue to change the shape of your community. Only through the development of a solid POCD or Master Plan, and by implementing that plan through appropriate land use regulations, can your community guide new development to where it is most appropriate and protect the natural resources and other important features that create the character of your community.
